LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A surf park and another Fremont Street Experience are just some of the ideas being considered for an aging Las Vegas shopping center.
Commercial Center is home to nearly 100 businesses and now Clark County is looking to redevelop the area.
The center opened in 1963 as the first shopping center in Las Vegas. Many famous visitors, including the Rat Pack and Elvis Presley, have shopped or dined here, but 61 years in the desert heat and years of decline have not helped the area.
“People have been trying to renovate the area for years and I think we are finally going to take the next step and make it happen,” Clark County Commission Chair Tick Segerblom explained on Monday. “We’re looking to buy more properties we bought two already. We’re going to renovate one and tear down the other one. We got major investment in the arena and then of course the restaurant. The number one restaurant in Las Vegas the Lotus of Siam is going to move back there in the next couple of months.”
Business owner and founder of the Commercial Center Business Association Paula Sadler said the investment by the county is a welcome sight.
The next phase of transforming this area into a tourist destination will take years but it is something Segerblom would like to see.
“Commercial Center is going to be the next entertainment area for Las Vegas,” he said. “We just got another $10 million dollars to invest there.”
The Lotus of Siam will reopen its Commercial Center location in 2025.
